We offer individual, couple, and family therapy sessions and always provide feedback to parents of minors, so progress can continue at home and school. We also work closely with schools and other providers to collaborate and provide consistent, helpful services.
Our individual sessions are customized to the needs and strengths of every client. For kids and teens, we utilize CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) techniques to connect their thoughts to their behaviors and consequences, but also use many fun and creative ways to teach the skills as well: books, games, art projects, creative solutions, social stories, role play, puppets (for the little ones), and much more. We work through strategies to help them in many areas such as: following a request, accepting the word no from parents, making and keeping friends, focusing, distractibility, fooling frustration and managing anger, organization, and executive functioning.
For adults, CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) techniques are also effective, so you learn what works to help you better manage your stress, emotions, and actions to get the results you want. We challenge you to think about what is working and what isn’t and find ways that will move you forward in the right direction.
At North Shore Family Services, we believe that all the work we do, whether it is working with your children and teens or with the parents or young adult, inevitably helps families. If your child is behaving better at school and home, the family is calmer. If your teen is less anxious at home and school, the family can relax too. If you are working on your reactions to stressful events and circumstances, the family is improving every day. We also offer family sessions, parenting sessions, and parenting training to solidify the work we do.
When life stresses weigh on couples, it can leave both members in a vulnerable and unsettling place. Our clinicians have been trained in the most widely-accepted techniques and strategies to assist couples in navigating the difficult times and building better communication strategies.
We are currently not offering groups as it is often difficult for excellent clinicians to ensure that the group members are a good fit with each other, their needs, and strengths. Often, families come to us saying that another provider has recommended a group for their child or teen. We assess each child’s readiness for a group, including assertiveness skills, empathy, and ability to engage with peers. Sometimes, the therapist may suggest some individual sessions to help the child be successful in a group setting. If the child is ready for a group, our therapists will refer to a group at another location that will match the child with peers who will be a good fit with them: addressing similar needs and utilizing their strengths.
Our staff has more than 20 years of experience working in the public schools. We know the services and accommodations that can help kids and teens have successful school days and we strive to help them achieve their goals. We have positive relationships with the schools and work with the school staff to provide the optimum environment for your child or teen. We often attend school staffings and meetings with you to walk you through the process as well. Many of these services are also covered by insurance.
